Join us at Settlement Music School MLC for an evening of jazz with pianist Tim Brey and an intergenerational ensemble of the region’s finest musicians. The Tim Brey Quintet presents a set of original music rooted in the swing and groove of Philadelphia.

About Tim Brey:
Tim Brey is a Philadelphia-based jazz pianist and composer. In his diverse career as a bandleader, sideman, and solo pianist, Brey has performed with Terell Stafford, Renée Fleming, Houston Person, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Peter Bernstein, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Samara Joy, Warren Wolf, Veronica Swift, Steve Wilson, Tim Warfield, Rodney Whitaker, and many more. His third studio album as a leader, “News,” debuting in October 2022, follows Brey’s expanding compositional vision for his quintet and sextet. About John Swana:
John Swana was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia, and began studying trumpet at the age of 11. He was drawn to jazz at the age of 17 after hearing Dizzy Gillespie, and the interest developed into a passion while he was in college, where he began transcribing the solos of Freddie Hubbard, Clifford Brown, Miles Davis, and Tom Harrell. Swana has performed and/or toured with the Mingus Big Band, and the Dave Holland Big Band, and has also played with well known jazz names such as Don Patterson, Shirley Scott, Mickey Roker, Stanley Turrentine, Harold Mabern, Cecil Payne, Johnny Coles, Ralph Peterson, Charles Fambrough, Bobby Watson, and many others.
About Elijah Jamal Balbed:
Elijah Jamal Balbed is one of the premiere Jazz Artists from Washington, DC, currently based in New York City. Winner of the 2020 DC Jazz Prix Competition and the 2019 WAMMIE-Award for Best Go-Go Song, Elijah has also been named Best Tenor Saxophonist (2013) and Best New Jazz Musician (2009) by the Washington City Paper. Elijah has performed, recorded, and/or toured with Fantasia, The Blackbyrds, Winard Harper & Jeli Posse, Patti Austin, Angelique Kidjo, Dr. John (RIP), Roy Ayers (RIP), George Duke (RIP), and many other artists/bands. In 2014, Elijah founded The JoGo Project - a Jazz / Go-Go fusion ensemble dedicated to promoting and preserving the legacy of DC’s unique art form.
