The Tier 2 Oliver McGowan mandatory training on learning disability and autism is designed for those who provide healthcare and support for people with a learning disability and autistic people.

This mandatory training, co-designed and co-delivered by autistic trainers and trainers with a learning disability, supports learners to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to offer excellent, person-centred care.

What to expect from our training:

An interactive session, delivered by a qualified trio consiting of a faciliating trainer two co-trainers with lived experience of learning disability and autism. The insight and accounts provided by our expert by lived experience trainers is core to the values of Oliver McGowan training and ensures a deeply impactful and authentic training experience.


Morning session: Learning Disability (9:30 - 12:30 including 15 minute break)

  • Understand the lives and experiences of people with a learning disability and recognise their strengths and contributions
  • Explore factors which impact on the care and support of people with a learning disability
  • Understand the key findings from the Learning from Lives and Deaths reviews
  • Know what reasonable adjustments are and how to make them


Afternoon session: Autism (1pm - 4pm including 15 minute break)

  • Enhance learners’ understanding of autism, good practice in health and social care settings and understand how this is supported by current legislation
  • Understand why autism is described as an invisible condition
  • Recognise potential differences, strengths and challenges for autistic people
  • Identify potential triggers for anxiety
  • Identify reasonable adjustments and ways to adapt practice
  • Be familiar with legislation and resources for inclusive, enabling services
