Zachary Granger was born in Columbus, Ohio, and began playing the trombone in the ninth grade as part of his public-school jazz program. Zachary started trombone lessons with local guitarist and former trombonist, Jim Pelz, and was given recordings of JJ Johnson and Frank Rosolino which propelled him into pursuing a career in music. Zachary's trademark as a trombonist is the beauty of his sound, stellar technique, and deep emotional connection to the music. With an ever-growing mastery of the instrument and extensive knowledge of jazz harmony, Zachary has distinguished himself as one of the pre-eminent musicians in Cincinnati, Ohio and the surrounding tristate area, not only in the realm of jazz and improvisation, but in the commercial music world as well.
Zachary regularly works in recording studios, the big band music scene and is highly sought after by many musical groups in Cincinnati and with touring acts. Zachary studied under Jim Pelz, Dominic Marino and Bill Gemmer. After some time, Zachary started studying with Marc Fields, his mentor, for nearly 8 years. Zachary received his Undergraduate and Master's degrees from Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music. Zachary has performed and recorded with the CCM Jazz Orchestra, Steve Allee, Craig Bailey, Sean Imboden, The Boss Hogg Big Band, The Flying Circus Big Band feat. Jeff Hamilton and the Cincinnati Contemporary Jazz Orchestra. Zachary has performed with Bobby Broom, Rufus Reid, Conrad Herwig, Branford Marsalis, Wayne Bergeron, Harry Allen, Jim Pugh, Brian Newman, Joel Frahm, Robin Eubanks, Sean Jones, John Clayton, Steve Kortya, John Fedchock, Matt Harris, William Menefield, Taylor Eigsti and Dan Pugach in a variety of different ensembles.
Zachary is Professor of trombone for Jazz and Commercial Music at Northern Kentucky University where he teaches lessons, Jazz Combos, Music of World Cultures, and Jazz History and Appreciation. Zachary has also assisted in teaching Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Improvisation and Jazz Pedagogy at Northern Kentucky University. Zachary previously taught at Miami-Oxford University where he was director of the Miami-Oxford Jazz Orchestra.
