Thumri Stories is a curated presentation that explores the many flavours of Thumri across the Purab and Punjab traditions, tracing its journey from the black-and-white era to contemporary times. The program weaves together rare, unheard gems and beloved classics, offering a nuanced understanding of the genre’s evolution while staying rooted in its emotional and lyrical core. Selected segments introduce a subtle modern soundscape, thoughtfully designed to make Thumri more accessible to today’s listeners without diluting its essence. Representing the two traditions are Atri Kotal (Purab) and Ayesha Mukherjee (Punjab), supported by a rich ensemble featuring Chakraborty Samrat on music arrangement and keyboards; Yashwant Vaishnav on tabla; Jyotirmoy Banerjee on harmonium; Vanraj Shastri on sarangi; Abshar Ahmed on guitar; Ghanshyam Chand on flute and shehnai; and Vaibhav Wavikar on multi-percussion. The evening opens with a violin recital by Maitrayee Pramanik, accompanied by Shankar Nandi on tabla, setting an evocative tone for the stories that follow.
