Gallery 1740 is pleased to announce the upcoming two-person exhibition "Through Windows and Across Parks," featuring the landscape inspired works of Savonna Nicole Atkins and Rachel Grant. Opening on Friday, November 15, 2024, this exhibition offers a thoughtful exploration of motherhood, self-concept, and the suburban experience, seen through the lens of painting, textiles, cyanotypes, and multimedia art.Atkins and Grant both earned their Master of Fine Arts degrees from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and they currently share a studio space in downtown Lawrenceville, Georgia. Through their paintings and experimental works, the exhibition reflects their ongoing dialogue with nature, childhood memories, and their roles as mothers navigating the demands of family life and creative practice. "Through Windows and Across Parks" invites viewers to explore the intersection of landscape and identity from two artistic perspectives. Both artists present abstracted interpretations of suburban views, translating everyday experiences—like the play of light and shadow in a park or a moment of stillness by a window—into vibrant, deeply personal works.
In addition to traditional paintings, the artists push the boundaries of landscape representation through multimedia and mixed-media textile works. Rachel Grant incorporates video projection, sound, and kinetic sculpture to create an immersive experience in “The Places Where We Dwell”, while Savonna Atkins integrates embroidered cyanotypes and textiles into her body of work. Merging fabric with acrylic painting extends her painted landscapes into sculptural forms that challenge the conventions of 2D painting. Lastly, the artists present a collaborative piece that reflects their shared experience of supporting each other in their studio practice, balancing tasks, and managing the joys and demands of motherhood.
