About this Event
In the early 20th century, Chicago thrived as America's "second city," yet its residents faced significant social and political challenges, including race riots in the 1910s, the rise of a gang society in the 1920s, and the tumultuous labor movements of the 1930s. How did Chicago's Japanese population of just over 300 perceive the city amidst these turbulent times? In this roundtable discussion, we aim to explore the collective and personal identities of Japanese American individuals, including their experiences of mobility and adaptability across nations and cultures, focusing on three Japanese American photographers who captured Chicago and its people.
