Sending letters and/or emails to clients at the beginning, middle, and end of therapy can be an excellent opportunity to support your intervention, encourage engagement, and enhance outcomes for clients. Therefore, effective letter writing is a key clinical skill for psychological practitioners. However, traditionally, training courses do not cover this in the core curriculum, and therapists have varying levels of confidence in their ability to write well-structured, concise, individualised therapeutic letters to their clients. This session will provide an overview of things to consider when writing to clients, to ensure that your written communications with clients have the most beneficial possible outcome.

  • Understanding the purpose of written communication and what factors to consider when writing to clients
  • Considering how to adjust your writing style depending on the purpose and audience of your letter
  • Developing confidence in written communication, particularly therapeutic letter writing

*therapeutic letter writing appears as a task on some clinical psychological doctorate interviews

This session is aimed at all low-intensity and high-intensity practitioners, working with adults and/or children

Delivered by: Dr Jessica Collins

Jess is a HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist, and in the final stages of BABCP accreditation as a CBT therapist. Jess has experience working with clients across a variety of populations, and currently works in a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service supporting children and young people and their families with a range of mental health difficulties, including anxiety and mood disorders, OCD, eating difficulties, self-harm and suicidality, and trauma-related difficulties. Jess primarily works within a CBT framework, but frequently integrates other modalities such as ACT and compassion-focused approaches. In her role, Jess also provides neurodevelopmental assessments, and has specialist knowledge in supporting neurodivergent young people. Jess has a passion for teaching and training, and has provided clinical training sessions to trainee psychologists on the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Newcastle University, with a focus on CBT, anxiety disorders, and working with children and families. Jess also has clinical interests in the role of attachment and developmental trauma, maternal mental health, working systemically, and reflective practice
