Guitar virtuoso Steven ‘Billy’ Buckley initially formed The Wagon Train – a firm favourite with mjf audiences over the years - to bring together the inspiration of the famous Ennio Morricone soundtracks from the 1960's and contemporary improvised music. With the recent release of the album I Spy, the band has augmented to feature a string section and has sought to look at how the influence of composers such as John Barry, David Axelrod and Jack Nitsche can work with improvisation alongside through-composed arrangements. The ensemble also uses the medium of projected image/film to give the audience a heightened aural and visual experience.

To open the evening, Norwegian cellist and composer Maja Bugge returns to mjf with SORTLAND , a new collaboration with pianist Dave Evans and film-maker Adam York Gregory.
SORTLAND is a meditative portrait of Maja’s home city, the ‘blue town’ situated 68 degrees north above the arctic circle. The work fuses evocative melodies, riffs and grooves inspired by this environment with a specially made backdrop of image and video. Together, these elements make a playful and gentle audio-visual homage to place, sound and memory.

Maja Bugge is a Norwegian jazz cellist and composer based in Lancaster. She has performed at MJF several times over the past 8 years both as a solo artist and in the bands Deep Cabaret and NORTHERN. She performs regularly in Europe and has released three solo albums: Together, No Exit and Shelter.
Dave Evans is a jazz pianist, composer and bandleader based in Leeds. He won the Parliamentary Jazz Award for Best Ensemble with his band Ubuyne, and regularly performs and collaborates with a wide range of musicians, from solo vocalists, to spoken word artists and large ensembles.
Adam York Gregory is a visual artist, scientist, animator and filmmaker based in Glasgow. His practice explores the synergies and contradictions between these disparate pursuits, frequently through collaboration.
