Hot Local Singles in Your Playlist and Ready, Set, Sound! are excited (and sad) to present:
The VEC’s Last [Band] Stand.
We acknowledge and respect the W̱SÁNEĆ and lək̓ʷəŋən peoples on whose traditional territory we live on as uninvited guests. The Songhees, Esquimalt and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples, whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day, have stewarded this land since time immemorial. We owe this land, and these peoples, our respect, gratitude & dedication to learning & decolonizing ourselves & the spaces we exist in.
The live music & performing arts communities have taken yet another devastating loss. The Victoria Event Centre (VEC) has announced that they will be closing their doors at the end of the month. The VEC has been a pillar of our community, a gold standard for local venues and a testament to safer spaces in Victoria.
We have been graced with the opportunity to throw the final full band bill to celebrate this wonderful space and the people that made it what it is. Join us in the collective mourning and wailing as we gather some incredible local bands to throw down one last time!
Optional Theme: Yassified Celebration of Live / Dress to Depress
Sweet Delirium [Shoegaze, R&B, Post-Punk]
Sweet Delirium is a 4-piece band based in Victoria, British Columbia, and consists of Irene Paule, Tev Uslu, Liam St. John and Greg Bertado. An eclectic mix of dream pop, shoegaze and R&B are showcased by melancholy instrumentation & soulful vocals. The band's debut single 'Necessities' was recorded and released through bandcamp during March 2020 and the band is currently in the recording process of their first album.
Charis Tazumi [Indie Folk, Singer-songwriter]
Charis Tazumi is an independent singer-songwriter based out of Victoria B.C, who shares her most heartfelt thoughts through wistful instrumentations and compelling lyricism. In May 2024, she released her debut album “In Subtle Ways”, recorded in Victoria with friend and collaborator Brendan Wong, as well other multi-genre and talented musicians. The album captures the subtle yet transformative moments of her life, weaving in narratives of delightful over imagination, the sweetness of starting a life with someone, and the feeling of finally waking up. While Charis is inspired by various genres such as folk, pop, indie, and alternative, the through line is Charis’ authenticity as a songwriter and the ethereal and compelling nature of her melodies.
Fangirl [Pop Punk, Surf Rock]
Just 3 lil freaks makin tunes for lil freaks in so-called Victoria, BC.
Sofia Miller [Alternative Folk, Shoegaze]
Sofia Miller is an independent solo artist, producer based in Victoria, British Columbia. She has made her most recent mark with her first full-length studio album, "Prologue". Recorded in Montreal with producer Guillaume Guilbault, this record reflects Sofia's personal journey of moving from the East to the West of Canada, addressing the growing pains and the profound realizations that come with one's early 20s. From her creative guitar licks to her soft airy falsetto, 'Prologue' is full of Sofia's untaught, unique sonics but this time backed with an all-star band and a hifi sound. This release is her fullest realization as an artist thus far as she departs from her makeshift bedroom sound to a more vivid and rich aural world.

This event is taking place on the traditional, stolen, unceded land of the Lekwungen and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples. We acknowledge the rich cultural history of the many peoples and rituals that have been affected by the ongoing process of dispossession and colonialism. We hold this understanding in our interactions and engagements with this land and its people.
