Life for the Stoppels from Germany was incredibly difficult; and their first winter was spent in a hand-dug cave in the side of a hill to survive the brutal Minnesota cold. Over time, that survival turned into prosperity. They built a thriving farmstead, including the iconic barn and house that still stand today as a testament to their labor and success. History is a continuous thread of resilience and migration, so with our newest exhibit, we bridge the gap between the mid-1800s and the present day as we explore the German immigrant experience through the lens of George Stoppel and the modern success story of Pete Schuller who will discuss his early life in a European refugee camp and the challenges of navigating a post-war landscape.$5 for non-members.
