Step back to 600 AD and recreate a day in a Saxon Village, exploring household trades, fighting drill, dispute settlement, riddles and story-telling.
Children start off by dressing up, getting their Saxon name, and then dividing into four households: Weavers, The Dairy, Bakers, Leather-workers.
A visiting storyteller (a Scop) is coming to the village, so each household is given props and information and asked to prepare a short scene showing how they have made their gift for the Scop. Each household in turn performs their scene to the rest of the group.
For example, the Weavers will show how they protect the sheep from wolves, shear the sheep, prepare the wool, and weave it into a scarf for the story teller.
Next the children use spears and shields to practice shield wall formation and war chants. Following a ‘death’ during the battle training, we see Saxon dispute settlement in action.
In the evening the Village gathers at a long table. The Scop arrives, the children tell riddles and present their household gifts, and the workshop concludes with a very interactive retelling of “Beowulf”.
All tickets £12 (Age guide 6-12). Accompanying adults free

SAFEGUARDING POLICY
Treehouse Theatre provides educational entertainment rather than child care, and children remain the responsibility of their parent or carer at all times. A parent (or their designated responsible adult) must remain in the hall or very close by. We have access to a kitchen for tea and coffee, and will create a space where you can chat so that conversations don’t disturb the workshop.
If you leave the premises you must tell our team and ensure you have left a phone number we can contact you on, and let us know who your designated responsible adult is, in your absence. Children may not be left without either a parent or designated responsible adult. Please don’t leave children who may need your support to access the workshop. Adults are welcome to join in alongside their children, especially if they require support to access the activity.
All Treehouse actors have a current DBS certificate which can be seen, and follow Equity’s guidelines for working with young people.
