Cuffs Run is one of the most beautiful, remote places in the Susquehanna Riverlands region. The trail winds through rocky crags, ancient mudstone, and enormous tree trunks. The mudstone has been exposed to heat and pressure, forming ropy bands that shimmer with mica. Quartz chunks are also present in the schist, which have formed from silica that precipitated out of an ancient sea and mineralized over time. This area is threatened by a proposed pumped storage hydroelectric project, which would lead to its destruction. Learn more here.What to Expect: This is a technical, strenuous 5-mile hike that includes rock scrambles, steep climbs, uneven terrain, and many elevation changes. We will follow the Mason-Dixon Trail through the beautiful, steep, and rugged terrain. This hike is for experienced hikers only, ages 18 and up. There are no restrooms available.
What to Bring: Each participant must have their own day pack with plenty of water and food, including lunch. Hiking poles are highly recommended. Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes. This event is outside so please dress appropriately for the weather conditions.
Where to Meet: We will meet at the Lock 2 recreation area in Long Level and shuttle attendees in the Lancaster Conservancy’s minibus to our starting point at Green Branch Road.
Hike Leaders: This hike will be led by Rachel Haynes and Mary Patterson, both Lancaster Conservancy Interpretive Rangers. Rachel loves discovering new places and basking in the lush glens tucked along the Susquehanna. Mary loves wildflowers and butterflies amongst the many other wonderful things that can be discovered in nature.
Refund Policy: If you are unable to attend this event after purchasing a ticket, refund requests must be made at least 48 hours before the event.
Cancellation Policy: This event will be held rain or shine, with cancellation for severe weather made at the time of the event. If the Conservancy reschedules the event, attendees will be emailed and tickets will be automatically moved to the new date. If the Conservancy cancels the event, attendees will be notified via email when possible and refunded.
