What are we making fun of?
Diet culture is a system that:
- Associates weight/food choices with moral virtue
- Socially isolates people based on their weight, size or shape
- Expects people to feel guilty and compensate for food choices
- Enforces expensive, limited food options on diverse groups of people
- Categorizes food as either "good" or "bad"
- Equates thinness to health
- Compares diverse individuals to an unattainable beauty standard
- Disproportionately harms women, femmes, trans people, those in larger bodies, people of color, and people with disabilities, impacting mental and physical health.
- Removes the joy of movement and categorizes exercise as just a weight loss method or punishment
- Prevents people in larger bodies from receiving adequate medical care
- Negatively affects EVERYONE!
We are NOT making fun of individual people - rather, we are poking fun at a system of oppression.
Trigger Warning
Please note that this event is centered around a system that hurts people. It will involve jokes by individuals who have their own unique experiences with diet culture. Some of the material may be detailed, uncomfortable, triggering, or upsetting. Although this event comes from an anti-diet approach, the material has not been censored. Everyone reacts differently to discussions of diet culture, and you may not yet be in a place to hear everything that may come up at this event. Please practice self-care and come to this event only if you are in a safe place in your own recovery to do so.
Planned in collaboration with:
Morgan Lorraine Gallo
Podcast Host, Comedian, and Eating Disorder Recovery Advocate
As a Colorado native, Morgan Lorraine has planted her roots in Denver, sending out feelers to the body-positive, anti-diet, intuitive minded girlies she knows walk the streets in the UGGs they've had since seventh grade. That's why she hosts all kinds of events - to gather the ranks of women who want to curate communities chock full of feminine energy.
Host of My Body, My Jokes - a podcast that tackles the absurdity of diet culture, self-expression, and everything in between through the lens of a comedian.
Each episode is a magnificent dumpster fire of exploring body acceptance, attempting to heal from our Mom’s back-handed compliments and navigating the human experience. Morgan also shares anecdotes from her own eating disorder recovery, and brings on guests weekly to discuss their journeys and much more.
