A who’s who of Bay Area jazz artists convenes on Friday, March 27 for a tribute to influential pianist, composer, and mentor, Mary Lou Williams. Williams wrote hundreds of compositions and arrangements for Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman as well as for her own acclaimed ensembles. She was a mentor to Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Tadd Dameron, Bud Powell, and Dizzy Gillespie, and was an in-demand sideperson, recording on more than 100 records. Her rich musical legacy weaves musical influences from spirituals to ragtime, blues, swing, bebop, orchestral and sacred music. The RealTime collective explores Williams’ musical legacy through original arrangements for quartet, with revered Bay Area pianist Tammy L. Hall holding down the piano chair. A pre-concert talk is planned with the artists at 7:30pm.Kristen Strom, saxophone & vocals
