About this Event
Voice of Iris presents The Ninth Wave, a new opera composed by Laura Nevitt with libretto by co-founder Cailin Smith. This tale is inspired by an ancient Irish mythological love story, told in modern language through a queer lens. Featuring 10 treble singers, this is our biggest project to date.
What happens when the goddess of love and beauty longs for something with more depth? How do the gods and mortals interact? The Ninth Wave is a timely retelling of this myth with themes of finding identity, violence and displacement, and searching for peace in another person.
About Voice of Iris:
Voice of Iris provides staged performance opportunities for those voices most directly impacted by the gender disparity in classical music: women and gender nonconforming treble voices. Through commissioning new repertoire, staging existing treble voice compositions, and gender-bending canonical classical and musical theater works, Voice of Iris empowers artists to explore diversity and intersectionality in music. Voice of Iris uses their stage time and genre-crossing performances to give voice to existing systems of oppression and encourage revolution, presenting their audiences with innovative, unapologetic, and musically excellent experiences.
