The Next Turn: Troubleshooting & Refinement
April 17th & May 15th
A Two-Part "Helpful Hints" Workshop
So, you’ve finished Beginner Wheel I... now what? You’ve mastered the basics of centering and pulling, but maybe your walls are still a bit wonky, or your cylinders keep collapsing. This specialized two-part series is designed to bridge the gap between "learning the steps" and "mastering the craft."
This isn’t a repeat of the basics; it’s a deep dive into the why and how of better pottery.
How It Works
To give you the best results, this class is split into two sessions with a four-week practice period in between. This gives you ample time to hit the studio, get your hands dirty, and apply what you learned in Part 1 before we meet again for Part 2.
Part 1: The Mechanics of Success
In our first session, we’ll break down the common challenges that hold beginners back.
The Power Center: Advanced bracing techniques to move the clay, rather than letting the clay move you.
Compression Secrets: How to prevent the dreaded "S-cracks" and keep your rims stable.
Size Matters: Learning how to create taller and/or wider pieces.
Part 2: Refinement & Problem Solving
(Meeting 4 weeks later) After a month of independent practice, we reunite to tackle the specific hurdles you encountered.
The "Why did this happen?" Audit: Bring in your "fails" and successes for a constructive look at your progress.
Trimming for Form: Using the wheel to turn a "heavy" pot into a professional-feeling piece.
Consistency: Tips to help you throw multiple pieces of the same size and weight.
Who Is This For?
This class is specifically for students who have completed Beginner Wheel I and feel comfortable centering on their own but want to improve their technical precision and confidence.
Materials & Clay
Please note: The course fee covers instruction and studio access during the four-week gap. Clay is not included in the tuition. * Participants must purchase their clay separately through the studio.
Pro Tip: Because of the four-week gap between sessions, we highly recommend clearing some time in your schedule to come in for at least two practice sessions. The "Helpful Hints" only stick if your hands get the reps!
