The Motivational Mums Club Conference:Launching our peer support report, Mummas Together Group (Improving mental health outcomes for Black Mothers/Birthing people)

On Monday 4 November 2024, The Motivational Mums Club will be hosting its first conference supported by King's College Hospital.

The aim of the conference is to push for peer support groups to have a dedicated place within the multidisciplinary model for mental health which should be adjusted to suit communities that need more assistance to make the service equitable. For healthcare professionals to work more closely with community leaders like myself within their local boroughs to prevent conditions getting worse whilst a parent is waiting for treatment via the NHS.

With that said, the conference will proudly present a report from our peer support, 'Mummas Together Group' based in the Bexley and Greenwich Borough aimed to support Black mothers/birthing people with their mental health. This will be an interactive event bridging community members, healthcare providers, policymakers and mothers to see the power of peer support groups working alongside healthcare professionals from the service. This is data collected and interviews conducted from users (black mums), GPs and midwives.

Through panels, and open dialogue, we'll spotlight gaps in current support and provide clarity on the path towards equitable, dignified and culturally competent care. With the theme being “The value of maternal mental health peer support groups & eradicating social isolation”, reputable speakers will share powerful perspectives to spotlight the Motivational Mums Club's work in our peer support group which contributes to making the service more equitable. Being the bridge for healthcare professionals to use to build a relationship with Black mothers but also to reduce the statistics that Black mothers are 13% more likely to experience PND and the most likely group to not seek help for their mental wellbeing.

This will be an opportunity to listen, learn and connect authentically alongside the community to tackle unconscious bias in care, advocate for overdue reforms, and eliminate disparities.

The Motivational Mums Club Report launch will take place on Monday 4 November from 10.30am to 2pm at Harris Birthright Centre, 20 Windsor Walk, London SE5 8BB.
