About this Event

"Cathy Segal-Garcia & The Moment - Live At The Blue Whale" is a recording that shows this group's musical and personal adventuring! If you're interested in Modern Jazz, songs plus improvisation, this is a group you won't want to miss! This is an evening of originals, standards, jazz compositions...and improvisational songs.

Segal-Garcia’s deep connection to rhythm and her earthy and organic voice bring a nakedness to her communication, a direct line into one’s heart. Her repertoire includes original compositions and modern interpretations of standards and jazz musicians’ compositions. With 18 CDs in the marketplace, “Musician’s singer”& “a vocalist of real music integrity” poignantly reports Critical Jazz reviewer.

Gary Fukushima, keyboardist-composer-educator, and writer for Downbeat, is known for his varied genre styles and his harmonic adventuring. He’s recorded and performed with such luminaries as: Mike Stern, Ben Wendel, Ngdugu Chancler, Mark Ferber, Larry Koonse, Joe LaBarbara, Darek Oles, John Daversa, Kathleen Grace, Roy McCurdy, etc. He navigates his multifaceted career with the finesse of a seasoned improviser. As a pianist, his fingers translate the complex language of jazz into narratives that resonate with both the heart and intellect. His performances, whether in the intimacy of a jazz club or the grandeur of a concert hall, are marked by a profound understanding of the genre's rich history and an innovative spirit that propels it forward.

Brad Rabuchin: “Well, with Brad Rabuchin there is nothing to fear, except perhaps the knowledge that hearing his incredible guitar playing might require a recovery period in order to figure out what just happened.” He is not one to paint by the numbers, musically speaking, or play by a given set of rules. He creates with liberal doses of jazz to rock to funk to ethereal aesthetics, and back. Some of the Brads’ credits include: Bonnie Rait, Roy Hardgrove, Louie Bellson, Pat Martino, Steve Turre, Al Kooper, Steve Wonder, Buddy Miles, Lean-to, Diane Shurr, David “Fathead” Newman, Willie Nelson and even Mr. Tom Jones. Brad also spent 5 years and toured 6 continents as the last guitarist with Ray Charles .

Chris Wabich: Grammy nominee Chris Wabich is a highly regarded and original voice on the drumset, steel drum, and percussion. His versatility as both a musician and producer is evident in the diverse range of artists he collaborates with, such as: Ludacris, Sting, Leonard Cohen, Stanley Jordan, Brian Johnson (AC/DC), Sheila E., Mark Murphy, “Joe’s Garage” produced by Gail Zappa and the Zappa Family, Steve Tyrell, Billy Vera, John Oats (Hall and Oates. Notably, Chris recently received the COLA master solo artist grant, marking him as the first percussionist to ever perform a solo show at the LA Grand Performances series.

Chuck Manning: approach has an emotional impact that is personal yet modern and displays Manning’s cocktail of musical influences including John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Joe Henderson, Bobby Bradford, Sonny Rollins, North Indian Classical flautist Pannalal Ghosh. If he’s heard it and liked it, it‘s likely to show up in his playing; smart, inventive solos exploring themes and tones inside and a little bit out, returning to a perfectly logical place. Chuck has made thousands of appearances over the years, in the LA area and throughout the world. He has had a 3 decades long collaboration with the Los Angeles Jazz Quartet, a group that includes Larry Koonse, Darek Oles and Jason Harnell. Gary Fukushima of Downbeat wrote, “Anyone who knows anything about jazz in L.A. knows these guys represent the very best of what’s great in this town.”
