The Miles Davis Story + Q&A with Director Mike Dibb at the Electric Palace To celebrate what would have been Miles Davis' 100th birthday week we present the ultimate documentary about the man, with introduction and Q and A with director Mike Dibb.
Fellow musicians, friends, lovers and family all agree that Miles Davis could be an objectionable old goat. Virtually all the contributors to this expansive documentary have a shocking anecdote to tell; Miles stealing their possessions to buy drugs, Miles behaving obnoxiously on the bandstand, Miles beating up his wives. And yet every tale is delivered with a forgiving chuckle, every outrage defused by the affectionate admiration that Davis couldn't help inspiring in his victims.
What redeemed him more than anything else is the sound that emerged from his trumpet. The fragile, haunted cry drew brilliant collaborators like a magnet, and articulated a sense of spiritual calm that was all too lacking in his personal life. The film exposes the sordid lows while celebrating the highs, and there is an abundance of fabulous concert footage.
There are also revealing interviews with collaborators Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett, all of whom seem to think that Miles was as much magician as musician. And didn't he look great in those huge hexagonal shades?
We are delighted to welcome Mike Dibb, director and award winning filmmaker for a post-screening Q and A. Mike Dibb has been producing and directing films for television for many years on a wide range of subjects, from cinema and jazz to art, sport, literature, science and popular culture. Among his many films are several made in collaboration with the writer John Berger: Ways of Seeing (BAFTA Award 1972 (later a best-selling book), Parting Shots from Animals, Pig Earth, Once upon a Time and A Telling Eye.
