In a concert not to be missed, Malachy Tallack and band will perform a rare homecoming gig in Mareel, showcasing songs from their 2024 album That Beautiful Atlantic Waltz. They'll be joined by American songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Cahalen Morrison, on a return visit to the isles. That Beautiful Atlantic Waltz was recorded as an accompaniment to Malachy's novel of the same name, a soulful exploration of the power of music and the pull of home. The songs are ostensibly written by the book's country music-loving character, Jack Paton. The band - in the studio and on stage - features Shetland music legends Jenna Reid on fiddle and Andrew Gifford on double bass, together with mandolin superstar Laura-Beth Salter.
Performances so far have included a sold out show at the Edinburgh International Book Festival and a support slot with Elvis Costello, who praised Malachy's novel as "wonderful". Other musicians have been equally effusive, with Karine Polwart calling it "a love letter to country music, and the emotional labour that songs do to keep us afloat." As for the music itself, KLOF magazine wrote that "at a time when a plethora of American artists are falling over themselves to recreate the spirit and songs of old-time country, who would have thought that one of the year's best and most authentic sounding would come from the Shetlands?"
Malachy and band will be supported and joined onstage by Cahalen Morrison, a performer from New Mexico well known for his singular turn of phrase and curiously poignant songs. Cahalen, who's equally at home on guitar, banjo and mandolin, dips deep into the well of tradition while continuously pushing boundaries of contemporary songwriting.
Programmed by Ragged Wood in association with Shetland Arts.
