Melitopol, in southern Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia Oblast, has long been a center of religious and cultural diversity, with Christian churches, especially Protestant ones, actively collaborating.
After Russia occupied Melitopol in 2022, local Christians faced repression: clergy were searched, interrogated, and in some cases deported or forced to flee. Several churches were banned and their property seized, while believers were pushed underground amid false accusations of stockpiling weapons.
The Kyiv Independent interviewed four priests, Bishop Dmytro Bodyu (Pentecostal “Word of Life”), Father Oleksandr Bohomaz (Ukrainian Greek Catholic), and Pastors Mykhailo Brytsyn and Ihor Ivashchuk (Baptist “Grace”), revealing Russia’s systematic terror against Ukrainian Christians.
