About this Event
The Integratron
with special guests owners and stewards of the Integratron Nancy and Joanne Karl, architectural historian Daniel Paul, and presented by Patricia Vernhes
In the vast stillness of the Mojave Desert stands The Integratron, a structure that continues to defy simple definition. Conceived in the mid-20th century by George Van Tassel, this remarkable all-wood, acoustically precise dome stands out as a gem of architecture, science, as well as a metaphysical sanctuary.
This historic and first of its kind event is a rare opportunity to meet Nancy Karl and Joanne Karl, two of the owners and stewards, who not only carefully restored the structure and the surrounding property, preserve it until present, but also evolved its legacy into what is now recognized worldwide as one of most important destinations for sound therapy.
As the originators of this transformative practice, the Karl sisters carry forward a lineage that bridges experimental science, healing, and deep listening. The evening will be hosted by artist, sound practitioner and former apprentice at The Integratron, Patricia Vernhes, whose journey reflects a direct transmission of knowledge, grounding this conversation in lived practice.
You are invited to explore the extraordinary properties, unique acoustic phenomena, and the scientific inquiries that continue to surround it; at once a masterpiece of design and an instrument of resonance, the structure invites us to reconsider the boundaries between space, sound, and human experience.
Joining the discussion is Daniel Paul, whose work was instrumental in securing its place at the National Register of Historic Places in April 2018. Daniel’s insight situates this unique site within a broader cultural and historical framework, affirming its position as one of the most singular structures of our time.
This panel opens a window into the mystery, innovation, and enduring relevance of The Integratron, a design phenomenon that continues to resonate across disciplines and generations. The event will conclude with a ten minute sound bath.
Tickets: $15 (in person only event)

Part of the Philosophy of Design SeriesThis April and May, we celebrate the transformative power of design with a series of events examining the work of influential architects, artists, and designers. We'll explore how their unique philosophies and principles are reflected in their creations—works that not only shaped the way we view the world and experience space but open up new possibilities for ways of living.
Daniel Paul is a Southern California-based federally qualified architectural historian. He attended the California State University Northridge, where in 2004 he earned a master’s degree in art history. His thesis presented the context and origin story of 1970s and 1980s-era mirror glass office park architecture. Involved in historic perseveration since 1994, Daniel authored the successfully listed National Register of Historic Places nomination for the Grandma Prisbrey’s Bottle Village art environment in 1996. His extensive preservation work includes the local landmark designations for the Capitol Records building and the entirety of Griffith Park, and the National Register listing of the Integratron itself. Daniel is presently Chairperson of the City of Glendale Historic Preservation Commission, oversees a preservation practice named Cultural Chapter, and is an architectural historian for the California Department of Transportation, District 7, for Los Angeles and Ventura Counties.
