About The Artist :
Isaiah Collier is a Chicago South Side native, a self-described "sonic scientist," and a multi-instrumentalist whose artistry spans far beyond the saxophone. A composer, arranger, bandleader, and curator, Collier is quickly becoming a visionary figure in contemporary jazz and creative music. Known for his innovative approach to sound, he also explores the realms of piano, drums, and various other instruments, establishing himself as a true renaissance artist.
Isaiah’s musical journey began in church and was heavily influenced by the music of his parents. At the age of 11, he picked up the saxophone, using it as his voice to communicate his artistic vision. Drawing inspiration from legends such as Gene Ammons, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Roscoe Mitchell, Quincy Jones, and many more, Collier honed his craft across various musical traditions.
Collier’s formal training took him through the Chicago High School for the Arts and The Jazz Institute of Chicago. He was also associated with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, further solidifying his place in the world of jazz. His membership in the esteemed Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) has been a key influence in his development as an artist. He furthered his studies at the prestigious Brubeck Institute, where he began to gain national attention for his creative work.
As a bandleader, Collier has released five albums to date, with his 2021 album Cosmic Transition earning widespread acclaim, including a five-star review. His work has also been recognized in the industry, with several projects being considered for Grammy nominations.
Collier’s collaborations with other groundbreaking artists, such as Kahil El’Zabar, Denardo Coleman, Davis Whitfield, Nat Reeves, Billy Hart, William Parker, Hamid Drake, Ambrose Akinmusire, Terreon Gully, Antonio Hart, Bobby Watson, Brian Simpson, and many others, have helped to push the boundaries of jazz and creative music.
Isaiah Collier continues to expand his sonic palette and establish himself as one of the most promising and visionary musicians of his generation.
