Every Book Has a Story. These Books Are People. What if the most powerful thing you could read was a person?
On Wednesday, April 1st, the MJC Library & Learning Center is hosting a Human Library, an open-house event where students are invited to "check out" a human book for a one-on-one conversation. The human books at this event are newcomers—immigrants, refugees, and international students—people who have navigated the profound experience of building a life somewhere new. They've crossed borders, learned new languages, rebuilt communities, and carried their cultures with them through it all. And on April 1st, they're opening themselves up to share those journeys with you.
The Human Library concept is simple and quietly radical: it asks us to slow down, sit with someone whose experience differs from our own, and actually listen. In a world that often reduces newcomers to statistics or headlines, this event offers something different: The chance to meet a person, not a narrative. To ask questions you've always wondered about. To leave with your assumptions gently challenged.
The program runs from 11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.; “readers” are welcome to drop in after 11:30 a.m. up until 2:00 p.m. You'll be guided to a human book whose story resonates with your curiosity, given a set of conversation questions to help get things started, and from there—it's just a conversation.
For the human books, this is an act of generosity and courage. They are not required to share anything that feels uncomfortable—they remain in control of how much of it they choose to tell. They carry with them a depth of experience, resilience, and cultural richness that most of us will never really know — unless we ask. April 1st is your chance to ask.
