One of Grand Rapids' longest-serving rock bands marks its 40th anniversary with this special celebration at SpeakEZ Lounge as part of Local Spins' Live Music Friday series. Alternately known as "the cicadas of rock" or "the deans of Grand Rapids pop-rock scene," keyboardist-singer John Sinkevics and guitarist-singer Charley Honey founded the band with late bassist Ron Hovingh in 1986 (after Sinkevics and Hovingh had started jamming together). The band -- inspired by the likes of The Beatles, Steve Earle, Tom Petty, Los Lobos, Elvis Costello and more -- has recorded and released two studio albums of original music ("Lane Changes Are Risky," "Studio Bee"), hosted more than 20 Feedback benefits raising money for food pantries and anti-poverty programs, and "created a buzz" at countless shows in the Grand Rapids area over the past four decades with a variety of lineups, but always with Sink and Charley at the helm.
The current band features Sinkevics, Honey, bassist-singer Matt Fouts, drummer Tom Taylor and singer-guitarist Alistair Beerens (son of longtime Honeytones singer Susan Beerens, who passed away in 2025).
This extra special Honeytones' 40th anniversary show will feature everything from songs played at the beginning of the band's career to brand new originals never performed live, with special guests joining in -- including former drummer and longtime pal Jerry Seim, multi-instrumentalist Jim Spalink and players to be named later.
C'mon down for an evening of memories, camaraderie, reunions and rock 'n' roll.
A $5 surcharge will be added to patrons' bill to help pay performers and a sound technician.
