A charming, wonderfully crafted hour about the unexpected friendships we make when we step outside our comfort zones.Danny Ward opens with a brilliantly scrappy video recap of The Holiday—the 2006 Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz Christmas romcom he worked on as a film student assistant. It's a fun way to get everyone on the same page, and sets up the easy-going, self-aware tone of the whole show.
Ward shares some sharp behind-the-scenes stories from the film set—the absurd demands on runners, the eye-watering waste that goes into movie-making—but the real heart of the show is his own Holiday experience. He did a house swap with a friend in Los Angeles and ended up befriending his neighbour, Martin, a Trump-loving conspiracy theorist. Two men who'd never have met in London suddenly find themselves going to a romantic dine-in-the-dark restaurant together and attending a bull-riding contest, where Ward delivers what he calls "the funniest thing I ever said." It genuinely is a brilliant line.
Throughout, Ward peppers in smart, effortlessly funny standup bits all told with warmth and self-deprecating wit.
This is intelligent, engaging comedy with real heart. Ward is a natural storyteller who finds something genuinely meaningful in an unlikely friendship, proving that connection can happen in the most unexpected places.
"A rather lovely piece of storytelling ...witty, well-constructed hour, told with a great deal of self-deprecating charm...executed with a deft touch, authentically heartfelt...elegant and funny…exceptional.”
