The Hidden Power of the Needle - Women, Work & Untold Histories

Discover how Toronto’s seamstresses used the needle trades to earn, save, and survive at a time when women were denied financial autonomy.

Set within 401 Richmond Street West, in the heart of the city’s historic Garment District, this intimate gathering features Dr. Alanna McKnight, Toronto-based historian, fashion expert and corset enthusiast, who will bring these powerful and often-overlooked stories to life.

The evening also includes a self-guided walk through the Museum of Toronto’s exhibition, The 52: Stories of Women Who Transformed Toronto. Built on a multi-year research project, the exhibition celebrates the lives of 52 women who have shaped Toronto from the 1800s to today.

The evening will be complemented by light refreshments and a grazing table to enjoy as the program unfolds.

Through this exhibition and conversation, we honour women’s legacies, elevate voices too often overlooked, and challenge the narratives that have excluded them for generations.

By bringing these stories forward, we celebrate the profound impact women have made and continue to make in every facet of life.

Originally a tin lithography factory, built between 1899 and 1923, this beautiful Heritage site sits at the epicentre of the garment district. In 1931 it stood witness to the Dressmakers’ Strike that saw thousands of immigrant women walk out of the surrounding factories to protest the sweatshop conditions.

The space was reimagined in 1994 through the vision of Margaret Zeidler, who transformed it into a home and sanctuary for artists, non-profits, and creative organizations. Learn More About This Venue.
