The Historical Association of Lewiston is pleased to present June Crawford for our April program: “The Grain Elevators; Saving Buffalo’s History”. This presentation will be at 7 PM Thursday, April 23, at the Lutheran Church of the Messiah Fellowship Hall, 915 Oneida Street in Lewiston. In the early 1800s, Buffalo was a small village. Its emergence as a thriving city that became one of the wealthiest areas of the United States by 1900 is directly related to its position on Lake Erie, the building of the Erie Canal, and the development of the grain silos that could handle the distribution of the nation’s grain supply. The invention of the grain elevator made this port so efficient that it changed the face of American farming and grain sales. The renaissance in Buffalo over the past two decades, in particular, is related to the history and architecture of the city. The silos and grain elevators are an important part of the history, and understanding the saving of these “cathedrals of Buffalo” is essential to maintaining them and integrating their stories into today’s preservation efforts.
June Crawford is a retired educator. Locally, she has been employed by Niagara University, SUNY Niagara, Medaille College, and the State University of New York at Buffalo. She is a member of several local historical associations and also serves as a local tour guide.
