☀ The Basics of Planting - Edition 05☀
Join The Gardening Drawing Club for a restorative moment , as we take you through the basics of growing organic vegetables and herbs before we paint and draw our impressions from these encounters.

Guided by artist and gardener Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck, this workshop will help you nurture your skills and confidence in gardening sustainably, giving you the basic know-how to start your horticultural experiments at home or additional tips and ideas for the more experienced growers.
Johanna will start by guiding us through the basics of growing organic vegetables and herbs, speaking to seed selection, soil, season, biodiversity, and gardening on a budget. We will also riff off the shapes, colours, and energies we find within plants and seeds to paint and draw our impressions from our encounters.
To honour the iconic setting of this workshop, participants are invited to end the session with the creation of a small pinch pot, which will be fired or recycled by Rochester Square.
No gardening experience is necessary – this event suits beginners and the most experienced gardeners. All organic seeds, veganic soil, pots, art supplies and plant-based painting materials will be provided!
Note to participants: organic herbal tea will be served to all attendees. To reduce the waste of single-use material, we kindly ask you to bring a cup with you.

Founded in 2021, The Gardening Drawing Club is a series of unique events with a holistic approach offering free access to arts and horticulture in Britain. With monthly happenings, The Gardening Drawing is hosted in a broad range of locations, from art centres to community gardens and temples; the events range from workshops to talks and experiences. About Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck

Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck (b.1990, Strasbourg, France) is a painter, transdisciplinary artist and cultural practitioner artist based in rural Oxfordshire (England). Her practice composed of painting, drawing, installation, sculpture, film, photography and writing often conceals ecological messages, rendered in soft and delicate methods. In several of the artist’s projects, interaction with the environment and others plays a central role. With a rich body of often semi-autobiographical work, Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck wishes to generate positivity and positive feelings, deriving inspiration from her daily life and close observation of nature. Solo exhibitions include 'Meeting' at Pon Ding in Taiwan and 'Dreaming About Tomorrow' at Nidi Gallery in Tokyo. InOtherWords Imprint, Chose Commune, and Jane & Jeremy have published books on her practice. In 2014, Johanna founded the positive and collaborative cultural project Poetic Pastel. In 2018, the artist co-founded the publication series Journal du Thé – Contemporary Tea Culture. In 2021 she founded The Gardening Drawing Club.

About Rochester Square
Rochester Square aims to bring people and communities together through ceramic facilities and socially-engaged projects. Emphasising the fascinating system of recycling clay: where after firing at a low temperature, the cups and pots are still so fragile that you can smash them on the ground after use and turn them back into the soil, which can then be used again to create new ceramic objects. This idea guides us in our approach to the development of activities at RS: a creative cycle from the earth (clay) to plants (garden) to plates (food). For us, there is great meaning in creating a space that can become a catalyst for people to meet each other through the powerful yet simple tools of making things together.
