About this Event
The Full English is a creative exploration of the evolving food cultures within the British Muslim community, with a particular focus on the iconic Full English breakfast. Once rarely available in halal form, this traditionally British dish has increasingly become a staple in Muslim households, halal cafés, and fusion menus across the UK. The project captures how food has become a powerful medium of cultural expression, connection, and adaptation within a multicultural society.
This special evening brings together audio storytelling, photography, film, and conversation:
Food Stories
The event will begin with a selection of short audio pieces—A Sea of Sausages and Crusty Loaf—offering personal reflections which complement the portraits which will be on display.
Exhibition Introduction
A short talk through the exhibition, highlighting key themes and photographs that trace how traditional British dishes entered Muslim households and became part of everyday life.
Film Screenings
- Changing Tastes (13:36) – A documentary commissioned by the Survey of London, exploring the South Asian restaurant scene in Whitechapel. Through interviews and archival footage, the film traces how Bangladeshi and Pakistani migrants shaped a new culinary landscape and how it continues to evolve.
- Chicken (5:39) – An award-winning short film examining the fried chicken shop phenomenon in Tower Hamlets, offering insight into what 'fried chicken' means to different communities.
Artist Bio
Nurull Islam is a community organiser, filmmaker, and co-founder of Mile End Community Project (MCP). Deeply rooted in Tower Hamlets, Nurull has led a number of award-winning creative projects tackling important grassroots issues. He has a unique ability to connect with communities and create platforms for underrepresented voices through film, photography, and participatory arts.
Nurull is an Honorary Fellow at Queen Mary University of London and collaborates with various academic departments on community engagement and storytelling.
