When a kindly widow named Widow Tweed adopts an orphaned fox kit she names Tod, he strikes up an unlikely friendship with Copper, a hound puppy belonging to her neighbor, the gruff hunter Amos Slade. Despite their natural roles as predator and prey, the young animals become inseparable playmates, promising to be "friends forever." But as they grow older, their bond is tested by the harsh realities of their world. Copper is trained as a hunting dog alongside Chief, Amos's veteran hound, while Tod must learn to survive in the wild. When a tragic accident during a hunt leaves Chief injured, Amos vows revenge on Tod, forcing Copper to choose between his lifelong friendship and his loyalty to his master. Widow Tweed makes the heartbreaking decision to release Tod into a game preserve, but even there, the fox cannot escape his past as Amos and Copper pursue him into the wilderness.
Disney's 1981 film stands apart from the studio's typical fairy tales, delivering an uncommonly mature story about how society's expectations and predetermined roles can destroy even the strongest friendships. Directors Ted Berman, Richard Rich, and Art Stevens don't shy away from genuine sadness—the sequence of Widow Tweed leaving Tod in the forest remains one of Disney's most emotionally devastating moments. The voice work is excellent, with Mickey Rooney and Kurt Russell bringing warmth to the adult Tod and Copper, while Pearl Bailey provides soulful wisdom as Big Mama the owl. The animation beautifully captures both the pastoral countryside and the dangerous wilderness, while Buddy Baker's score and the song "Best of Friends" underscore the tragedy. Unlike most Disney films, this one doesn't offer easy answers or magical solutions—just the bittersweet reality that sometimes love and friendship aren't enough to overcome the world's divisions.
