About this Event

Join water steward and educator Shahira Sakiyama, Herbalists, educator and author LoriAnn Bird (aka Lori Snyder), and artist, Holly Schmidt, as they guide you on a live journey through the St. George Rainway.

The St. George Rainway (SGR) began as a grass-roots community initiative over 20 years ago. The community wanted St. George Street, between Kingsway and E. 5th Ave., transformed back into a long-forgotten stream. The City saw this project as an opportunity to re-imagine what an urban ephemeral creek could be.

The first phase of SGR, between E 5th Ave and Broadway, is nearing completion. This 4-block green rainwater infrastructure (GRI) feature manages polluted rainwater runoff, creates vibrant public spaces and promotes active transportation. When complete, a series of rain gardens will treat 17,000 m3 of polluted urban rainwater runoff on average each year – that’s equivalent to 113,300 bathtubs!

Walk with us and listen: to the stories of the neighbours who sparked this vision; to the voices of plants that root and flourish here; to the art woven into the living fabric of the watershed.

And when the walk is done, stay a while—share some tea, food, and company—and contribute to the ongoing story of the Rainway.

Thank you to TD Friends of the Environment whose support has made this tour possible.
