Sponsored by Victoria’s Secret and in partnership with breast cancer charity, Future Dreams, the research study ‘Empowered Journeys: A Co-Curated Exploration of Breast Cancer Surgery’ is a pioneering endeavour led by Frankie Vale, a dedicated PhD student at the University of Glasgow.
Frankie's profound personal experience- having undergone a bilateral risk-reducing mastectomy with immediate reconstruction- led her to bring her lived experience together with her interests in publicly engaged curating, to lead the Empowered Journeys study.
Centred around creative workshops with a group of co-curators who all have lived experiences of breast cancer surgery, the collaborative approach of Empowered Journeys provided a safe space to openly share and validate their unique experiences through creative expression, in turn empowering them through gaining some closure and a close support network.
The Empowered Journeys exhibition is the culmination of these creative workshops.
