About this Event
Archival Toronto is excited to host the Toronto premiere of The Designer is Dead, a haunting and visceral documentary chronicling the spectacular rise and self-imposed exile of fashion’s great provocateur of the late 90s and 00s, Miguel Adrover, directed and written by Gonzalo Hergueta.
SYNOPSIS
The Designer is Dead tells the story of Miguel Adrover, the visionary Majorcan designer who redefined the world of fashion.
Celebrated for his groundbreaking contributions to multiculturalism, sustainability, and social and political expression, Adrover was once seen as the future of fashion. However, just a few years after his meteoric rise, he faded into obscurity and retreated to a small town on the island of Mallorca, where he sought new inspiration.
This documentary explores Miguel’s journey over the past decade: years of introspection and creative exploration through clothing, mannequins, and photography, while also revisiting his eccentric and influential past. Featuring never-before-seen archival footage and his iconic unreleased runway shows, The Designer is Dead offers an intimate portrait of a man who transformed the fashion landscape and continues to innovate.
With testimonies from Jennifer HoDman, a close collaborator of Adrover, and Pulitzer Prize–winning fashion critic Robin Givhan, the film explores themes of identity, success, and the search for a meaningful life beyond the runway.
