This is not a standard event.

On Saturday, 20 June 2026, World Refugee Day, Across the Border CIC will open the doors of Arc House in Harrow to those willing to step into a different kind of experience. One that does not begin when you arrive. One that has, in fact, already begun.

The Courage to Call It Home is an immersive evening that takes you through the journey of seeking asylum in the United Kingdom. Not as an observer. As a participant.

What to expect, and what not to

  • You will be issued a travel document on arrival. We won't tell you what it means yet.
  • You will be asked to wait. No reason will be given. No timeline will be offered.
  • You will hear your language, or you will not. You will sit in a room where the official language is not yours. You will be expected to navigate, to understand, to comply.
  • You will be asked to prove yourself. To demonstrate that you belong. To answer questions about a country you may have lived in your entire life.
  • And at the end of the evening, you will look at the document you have been carrying and understand, perhaps for the first time, what it means to have your future held in someone else's hands.

For many people, this is not an experience. It is their life.

Why 20 June?

World Refugee Day (21st of June) marks 75 years since the 1951 Refugee Convention, the agreement that said those forced to flee deserve protection, dignity, and hope. 75 years later, 548,400 refugees live in the UK. The average wait for a decision on their future is 21 months. During that wait, they receive £7 a day. They cannot work. They wait.

The theme of Refugee Week 2026 is Courage. This evening exists to ask what that word truly means, and to hear, directly, from those who live it.

On the night

🗂 You will receive a Journey Card: a travel document

🌍 Introductions

⏳ You will be told to wait. And you will wait

📋 You will take the Life in the UK Test

🎤 You will hear a story told without a stage, without distance, from someone who lived it

✨ You will be asked what courage looks like

🔴 And at the end, you will look at your card. And you will understand

A note before you book

This event is immersive and emotionally engaging. Some moments are designed to be uncomfortable. That discomfort is intentional; it is the closest we can offer to an experience that millions of people cannot opt out of.

You may opt out of any activity at any time. A quiet space will be available throughout. No prior knowledge is required. All are welcome.

If cost is a barrier to attending, please write to us at [email protected]. We will not turn anyone away.
