Instructor:

Gaurav Virkar is a freelance cinematographer born in Mumbai, India, who now calls Toronto home. His foray into filmmaking began in high school as principal cast on commercials. The excitement behind the camera is what peaked his interest in the industry and got him started as a PA which eventually led to videography work for brands, corporates and musicians.

Working as a one man band self taught filmmaker for a few years taught him how to produce, write, direct, shoot and edit. This made him realise that what he enjoyed most was being on the camera. His desire to take it up a notch and turn his videography into cinematography is what brought him to Toronto where he enrolled into the Video Design and Production program at George Brown College.

After graduating as valedictorian he got straight to building the foundation of what's needed to succeed as a cinematographer. He started to work as an assistant camera and as a lighting and grip technician, he also worked with notable rental houses. These jobs taught him how to use the tools available to a cinematographer and more importantly it helped him grow his network in the industry

While building this foundation, Gaurav simultaneously kept shooting and honing his craft. He's shot commercials for brands like Cha Time and M&M Food Market. Outside of commercials his body of work covers short films, documentaries and music videos. Gaurav is also an Affiliate Member of the Canadian Society of Cinematographers.

What he enjoys most about film is the opportunity to collaborate, learn from people of diverse backgrounds and the ability to tell stories that spark conversations that lead people towards deeper truths.
