About this Event
Black Liberation Theologian James Cone recognized Jesus Christ as a dark-skinned Hebrew whose God stands with the oppressed. Cone remixed Chrisitanity from the perspective of Black liberation, and compared the Cross to the lynching tree. If God is the god of liberation for the oppressed, then, in a White supremacist society, God identifies with Blackness. Cone concluded: God is Black.
Join us for our next free, public screening, followed by discussion. All are welcome.
This month's screening is a hip hop stoner comedy set during the life of Christ that plays like a blaxploitation Ben-Hur. The filmmakers reimagine the place of Black people in the Biblical narrative in a respectfully irreverent way that directly challenges the images of an Aryan Jesus that underly White Christian Nationalism in America. Can a Black Jesus save us from fascism? We will discuss these issues and more with our theological mixmasters Dr. Kyle Brooks, Assistant Professor of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of San Diego, and Dr. Montague Williams, Professor of Church, Culture and Society at Point Loma Nazarene University
