Join us for an evening of champagne tasting and science, in aid of STEM charity Science Creates Outreach (registered charity #1199986)
About this Event

Step into the effervescent world of champagne and discover the science behind the bubbles at this exclusive fundraising event for Science Creates Outreach.

Led by Dr John Manley, this fascinating talk and tasting session will delve into the rich history of champagne and the centuries-old "Traditional Method" - where maisons, caves and cellars acted as science laboratories for makers refining their craft.

Learn how secondary fermentation is core to creating the iconic bubbles through dissolved carbon dioxide, and uncover the biochemistry behind the lees (dead yeast cells) that give champagnes their distinct aromas and flavours.

From the science of fizz to the journey from bottle to glass, this evening event offers the perfect blend of science learning and complementary champagne tasting.

Join us in raising a glass to the chemistry of champagne - all in support of science outreach for young people in Bristol.

PLEASE NOTE: ALL ATTENDEES WILL NEED TO PROMPTY LEAVE THE PREMISES BY 9.15PM

About

We are a registered STEM charity with a mission to demystify scientific careers, diversify the faces of science and empower confident, skilled problem solvers to be our future scientists and entrepreneurs. Based in The Learning Lab at Science Creates Old Market, we offer behind-the-scenes tours of deep tech science laboratories, curriculum linked workshops and conversations with researchers and engineers, to spark young people’s interest in science and innovation.

About

The speaker is Dr John Manley, a Bristol alumnus in Chemistry (BSc and PhD). John worked at HP Labs for almost 28 years, rising to become Laboratory Director for Cloud Computing. He was High Sheriff of the County and City of Bristol during 2020-21, and is currently a Visiting Professor at the University of the West of England. John has been developing a series of talks on wine, which combine his passions for wine and wine-making with chemistry - a relationship which is still far from completely understood. After hosting two sold-out Chemistry of Wine events at Science Creates in the past two years, John has returned to continue the series with a third event on champagne.
