Join the Friends of Portsdown Hill for the opening talk of its 2025-26 programme! The chalk of Portsdown Hill, exposed in disused quarries, provides remarkable insights into the warm greenhouse world of the late Cretaceous. Here, in the Campanian Stage (about 80 million years ago) the tranquil sea floor was transformed by erosion of a deep channel, the sides of which slumped, with huge masses of chalk forming submarine landslides. Eventually, the structures were buried and peaceful sedimentation returned.
The talk will take you on a trip through the chalk of Portsdown and its importance to chalk geology.
Andy Gale is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Portsmouth and a Research Associate of the Natural history Museum, London.
Admission £3 at door - includes refreshments afterwards.
