About this Event

The JL Walker Project Presents Our Annual Anti-Racism, Anti-Violence, and Mental Health Awareness: Caribbean Fashion Weekend “A Caricom Cruise” Ages 13 - Up Welcome “Rated - PG 13” A Runway Fashion Show.

The Caribbean Fashion Weekend on August 17, 2024 at the African American Art Museum will feature fashion designers from Philadelphia, New York, Washington DC, New Jersey, and Jamaica. We will host make-up artists, models, dancers, rappers, singers, poets, comedians, community leaders, councilmembers, actors, vendors, and photographers. Philadelphia, PA, August 17, 2024 - The JLW Project is a nonprofit organization aimed at eliminating the current dropout rates throughout Philadelphia schools, and other urban centers throughout the nation. Currently, over a fifth of Philadelphia high school students never graduate, and of those that do- more than seventy percent do not graduate from college. Both statistics point to the need for strong and strategic intervention.

Through the marriage of education to young adults with anti-violence and anti-racism initiatives, the JLW Project’s opportunities for leadership and creative expression serve as the foundation from which students can graduate, grow, and positively contribute to their neighborhoods and communities.

Enter The Caribbean Fashion Weekend - a yearly Fundraising Event that will showcase Philly-based youth and young adults. The Jungle Caribbean Fashion Weekend - A Runway Fashion Show paying homage to the natives in the Caribbean, educating the Philadelphia community on their traditions, while presenting top tier Fashions from around the world. This endeavor takes months to bring together for the public to enjoy. As a result, participants get direct exposure to problem solving, team building, and effective communication. These and other soft skills are so vital for both academic and social success. The memories created curate new creative partnerships- and friendships. The African American Art Museum, African American Caribbean Association, The Mayors Commission of Philadelphia, and Stephanie Cain have become new Sponsors of The JL Walker Project in Supporting the annual “Caribbean Fashion Weekend.” We are aiming to raise funds that we can donate to those in need in the Caribbean.

Most importantly The JLW Project uses the proceeds from any Fundraising Events to save for our 2025 goal to fund the establishment of real estate dedicated to a stand-alone licensed public charter school focused on fine arts and trade skills. This school will serve as the hub for all things JLW Project related- male leadership training, youth tutoring, fashion coaching, and community outreach. When the first class of students graduates from the JLW Project as 8th graders, they will be primed for high school excellence, strongly prepared for high school success and graduation. The public is highly encouraged to visit jlwalkerproject.com or eventbrite.com for ticketing.

The event is scheduled for August 17, 2024, with a strict start time of 5:00pm. Ticketing is tiered - VIP and general admission - and is selling out quickly. VIP ticket holders get preferential seating, and special gift bags. The address for The Caribbean Fashion Weekend is 701 Arch Street Philadelphia PA 19106, The African American Art Museum.
