Tyfodd JuJu a Psycho Les i fyny mewn cymunedau gwahanol yn Queens, Dinas Efrog Newydd. Dechreuodd Psycho Les gynhyrchu curiadau a DJio yn 15 oed o dan enwau ffug, gan gynnwys, DJ Les Jams a DJ Incredible. Mewn ysgol uwchradd yn Flushing, Queens, cyflwynodd ffrind DJ Loco Moe Les i’w gyd-gynhyrchydd JuJu. Wrth gloddio mewn cratiau recordiau, daeth y ddau Beatnut ar draws Afrika Baby Bam o’r Jungle Brothers. Cyflwynodd Afrika nhw i aelodau Native Tongues, gan gynnwys De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest a’r Jungle Brothers. Ar yr adeg hon, roedd JuJu a Psycho Les yn DJio mewn partïon o dan yr enw ffug Beat Kings. Honnodd y Jungle Brothers nad oeddent yn frenhinoedd, ond yn hytrach yn ddau gnŵt oherwydd eu natur ddoniol a’r ffaith eu bod yn ddigon gwallgof i gario cannoedd o recordiau i bob sioe a chwaraewyd. Felly fe wnaethant newid eu henw i ‘The Beatunuts’.

JuJu and Psycho Les grew up in different communities in Queens, New York City. Psycho Les started producing beats and DJing at age 15 under aliases including DJ Les Jams and DJ Incredible. At a high school in Flushing, Queens, a friend DJ Loco Moe introduced Les to fellow producer JuJu. While crate digging, both Beatnuts ran into Afrika Baby Bam from the Jungle Brothers. Afrika introduced them to Native Tongues members including De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and the Jungle Brothers. At this time, JuJu and Psycho Les were DJing parties under the alias Beat Kings. The Jungle Brothers claimed that they were not kings, but rather two nuts for their comical nature and the fact that they were crazy enough to carry hundreds of records to every show they played. They thus changed their name and “it stuck.”
