“Hey now! These guys are good! Who is The Barlow?” It’s a question heard regularly on Friday and Saturday nights in bars and honky-tonks across the Rockies and high-plains in the middle of the country. The answer to this requires a more complete description of the scene you are immersed in…
There is a critical juncture, a point in space and time where traditional country, raucous roadhouse rock n’ roll, southern rock and rootsy americana all converge; that apex is where the elite in the Texas/Red Dirt Country scene have planted their flag. Replete with rowdy, boot-stompin’, up-tempo beats; sometimes cutting, often times soaring, guitar leads; rip-your-heart out fiddle and pedal steel instrumentals; feel-good bass grooves that anyone can move to; and lyrical stories cut straight from real life in middle America; it’s the soundtrack of the current-day, regular Joe and Jane.
This is exactly who The Barlow are; 4-guys, from as unlikely a place as any, to lay down the Country-Rock anthems you’d expect to hear in Austin or Stillwater; Savannah, Raleigh or Mobile. Whatever you do, just don’t call it Nashville! This is Colorado Country! Driven right out of Denver and the rugged Rockies. And that’s significant! It’s heartfelt and relatable. Above all, it’s authentic!
“Denver is a hard place to launch from; it’s so far from everything… all the places we would fit in. It’s a music scene that isn’t on anyone’s big, national radar. But for us, that just means we have the opportunity to work harder for our wins!” These are the sentiments of frontman and founder of The Barlow, Shea Boynton. Together with Jason Berner on bass, Brad Johnson on lead guitar and harmony vocals, and Big Ben Richter on drums, the boys have found their groove bringing their lively, Rocky Mountain party to stages large and small; from Northern California to Iowa; Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and everywhere in between.
Says Boynton, of The Barlow’s albums: “While there’s a few narrative pieces, the songs are mostly based on personal experience. Each record is a step towards defining our sound and what we do. Instead of comparing things to others’ sound or style, we aim to make it our own.” The Barlow has certainly made a space of their own in this scene. These four guys have no desire to blend into the background. They have something to say.
With their 4th, full length album set to release in April, 2025, High Spirits is primed to demonstrate how the guys have brought greater depth and intrigue to their sonic identity. Working with Evergroove studios in Evergreen … and particularly Wes Sharon in Norman, Oklahoma (The Turnpike Troubadours, Parker Millsap, John Fullbright, The Damn Quails, Byron Berline, and Mike McClure), High Spirits is proving to be the next, right step towards a tighter, more precise and defined personality for The Barlow.
Now that High Spirits is on-deck, gearing up for its Honky-tonk bar debut, what’s next for The Barlow? Hitting the road, of course. The band has tour dates in Nebraska, Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma and Colorado, lined up throughout 2025, with plenty more on the way. The boys are bringing Colorado country to the fans, proving their worth in front of an audience ready to ride with them through mountainous terrain and flat plains. Come on out, join the fellas for a rockin’ mountain party!
