"The Art of FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE" 《霸王別姬 聲•色•藝》is a cross-arts production that includes Chinese music and Cantonese Opera. The performance aims to present the story of FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE in different Chinese art forms to the audience.
A group of students from STARLIGHT, will perform Nanyin (南音), also known as "southern tunes." Nanyin is a narrative song art presented in the Cantonese vernacular that was a popular form of entertainment in Hong Kong during the early 20th century. Today, Nanyin is blended into Cantonese opera and Cantonese operatic songs as part of their singing elements.
STARLIGHT is also thrilled to have Wen Zhao (趙文欣) in this event. Wen Zhao is an internationally recognized pipa virtuoso who combines eastern and western classical traditions in her music-making. Zhao was born in Beijing, China, and advanced her studies with pipa master Wang Fan Di at Beijing Normal University and subsequently at the University of London, becoming the first qualified Chinese music instructor in the United Kingdom. Since coming to Toronto in 1997, she has continued to pursue her career as an educator and performer on the world music stage. Zhao will perform "Conqueror Xiangyu Takes Off His Armour," a Pipa music piece that depicts the dreary and tragic scene of Xiang Yu taking off his armour after his defeat.

We are pleased to announce that, due to the overwhelming response, Starlight Opera will now be offering stand-by tickets to the public. In the event that registered ticket holders do not check in by 2:15 pm, their seats will be made available to stand-by audience members starting at 2:20 pm. We kindly request that interested members of the audience queue up at the entry point starting at 2 pm. We will assign seats based on the order of the line. Please note that seats will be randomly assigned and will be subject to our free seating policy, which means that seats may not be together.
