About this Event

The Art of Connection: A student mental health showcase is an exhibit of student art, brought to you by the McMaster Museum of Art, the McMaster Centre for Health Equity (MCHE), the McMaster Community Research Platform (CRP), and the McMaster Centre for Advanced Research on Mental Health and Society (ARMS) initiative.

Members of the McMaster community, including undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and alumni, have submitted various artworks in the form of paintings, poetry, photography, and digital illustrates that reflect their personal mental wellness journey. Some of the artists will be sharing about their experiences on mental health and the creative processes that influence their work. This showcase aims to initiate campus-wide discussions on mental health challenges and act as a powerful physical representation of a student-centred self-discovery process. The goal is to reduce stigma associated with mental health issues and provide a channel where students feel comfortable sharing personal struggles, which is an important first step towards improving mental wellness.

Overall, the program aims to have you:

  1. Critically reflect and share your mental health journeys through artistic and creative lens
  2. Share your perspectives on mental wellbeing and prompt discussion with like-minded students
  3. Learn art-based techniques for managing mental health issues including depression and anxiety
  4. Relieve stress through creating art

This event will allow you to hear more from students on their artistic journeys, celebrate students’ creativity and resilience, as well as learn more about resources available for promoting student mental health! Gourmet sandwiches, appetizers, and a cash bar are available.

The day before this art exhibit, ARMS will be hosting a Student Mental Health Symposium, so if you're interested in attending, please click here!
