Join us for an evening of Antarctica! We’re showing a captivating selection of short films straight from the icy wilderness of Antarctica. Before the films, hear from Frank Graveson, who will compare what life was like at Scott Base in his time with the way it is today — including stories from an unforgettable field trip with the dogs.
Frank arrived at Scott Base in October 1962 as the station “Handyman,” tasked with drilling holes into permafrost to anchor new buildings to be erected by a New Zealand Army party that summer. But much of his time quickly shifted to caring for the huskies, and he was invited to stay on for the 1963 winter as a second dog handler.
Together with fellow handler Maurice Sheehan, Frank then joined the six-man Northern Field Party in the 1963–64 summer, helping complete the mapping of the Trans-Antarctic Mountains—a legendary dog-sledge journey of around 2000 km in 100 days, often described as one of the longest of its kind.
