A Vienna Pride Walk by Qwien – Centre for Queer History Vienna · Guided Tour · EnglishAbout this Event
For centuries, queer people had to hide. The Ringstrasse and the University of Vienna preserve their traces – and on this Vienna Pride Walk, we make them visible and tangible. The absence of queer history is no coincidence, but the result of systematic erasure. We respond to this forgetting with remembrance and reclamation.
Vienna – home of the oldest German-language university and birthplace of groundbreaking ideas. Here, visionary scholars from medicine and law shaped the European discourse on homosexuality like nowhere else. Here, queer history was written – in the truest sense of the word. This Vienna Pride Walk takes us to the places where it all began.
What to expect?
The "Invention" of Homosexuality In the historic Arcaded Courtyard of the University of Vienna, we encounter the leading minds who decisively shaped the history of homosexuality – and reveal where and how the term "homosexuality" was actually "invented", a milestone that changed the queer world.
Resistance & Solidarity Along the magnificent Ringstrasse, we dive into more recent queer history: from the courageous fight against AIDS and the legendary Life Ball to the hard-won legal equality for same-sex couples in the Austrian Parliament.
From Discourse to Triumph Every stop along the Ringstrasse tells of resistance, solidarity and triumph – a journey through queer Viennese history that moves and inspires.
