About this Event
For centuries, queer people had to hide. The streets and corners around the Naschmarkt preserve their traces – and on this Vienna Pride Walk, we make them visible and tangible. The absence of queer history is no coincidence, but the result of systematic erasure. We respond to this forgetting with remembrance and reclamation.
The Naschmarkt – today a vibrant meeting point for food lovers from all over the world. But do you know its hidden queer soul? A multifaceted queer nightlife has pulsed here for decades, one that was only allowed to exist in the shadows – until now. This Vienna Pride Walk brings it into the light.
What to expect?
Secret Places & Vivid Stories We uncover the history of queer life around the Naschmarkt – from secret meeting spots to legendary venues that were often known only to insiders.
Between Prohibition and Desire At a time when homosexual contact was strictly forbidden, courageous people defied repression: in parks, hidden corners and public conveniences – spaces of freedom and community they created for themselves.
From Hidden to Visible We explore the diverse queer life along the Naschmarkt – from past to present. The walk ends at Qwien, the Centre for Queer History Vienna.
About Qwien Qwien – Centre for Queer History Vienna – considers education and outreach a core part of its work: history should not only be preserved, but made accessible and tangible. Our Vienna Pride Walks and city tours are open to everyone who wants to discover Vienna in a new light.
