On 25 April 1974, a military coup toppled the authoritarian regime in Portugal and sparked a vibrant popular revolution that lasted eighteen months. Emerging from the shadows of a stifling dictatorship, the Portuguese people, most for the first time, discovered new freedoms - among them, the freedom of expression.
As part of Ideas for Freedom socialist festival (20-21 July) Alex Fernandes, author of , tells the story of the Carnation Revolution through the visual art that emerged in and about revolutionary Portugal, with particular focus on the work of João Abel Manta.
