About this Event
Thaarattu - The Last Lullaby
Thaarattu is an intimate Bharatanatyam production that centres the voice of Kaikasi, the mother of Ravana.
What does a mother say when she knows tomorrow may change everything?
Often remembered only in relation to her son, Kaikasi herself is rarely heard. Born into the rakshasa clan, shaped by exile and survival, she rises from forest dweller to Queen Mother of Lanka. Fiercely ambitious and deeply devoted, she raises a son she believes is destined for greatness.
On the penultimate night of the war, as battle draws toward its inevitable end, Kaikasi understands what she cannot openly speak: her warrior son will not step back. She cannot ask him to surrender. She cannot change fate. What she can offer is something only a mother can is a final lullaby. A reminder of the courage, brilliance, and strength she nurtured in him.
Beneath her composure lies a quiet knowing that he may not survive the dawn.
This story is as true today as it has ever been. Across the world, mothers in conflict zones carry the same unspoken fears. They wonder if their child will return. They question destiny, ambition, and their own choices. They hold pride and dread in the same breath.
Rooted in the rich expressive language of Bharatanatyam, Thaarattu does not retell an epic , it enters the emotional space behind it. Through movement and storytelling, the production explores motherhood as power, vulnerability, pride, and love in its most complex form.
Conceived and directed by Shruti Gopal, this work offers a powerful feminine lens on a narrative often defined by war.
Whether you are familiar with Indian classical dance or encountering it for the first time, you are warmly invited.
Join us for an intimate evening of movement, storytelling, and a mother's final lullaby
