Tenx9 stories & The Parkinson's Project film

Tenx9 is partnering with The Pakinson's Project at Broadway Cinema to bring you an evening of true stories on the theme of Resilience. We will be joined by the film director Jess James & The Parky Players for a Q&A.

If ever the search for resilience should end, it is here. Any diagnosis can make us feel the future might stop. This film teaches us that out of what we have left, by looking at it and responding to it, with modesty, through the body and the mind, we have some control. What emerges is what we are still full of - friendship and boulders - not a broken body. Prepare for an evening that will be psychologically inspiring and a poetic reflection on being human, on all levels, not just our vulnerabilities.

The Parkinson's Project

The Parkinsons Project follows climber and teacher, Chris Hamper, as he navigates his diagnosis of Parkinson's disease.

His Parkinson's diagnosis has forced him to redefine his passion for climbing. His tremor makes tying knots and clipping gear difficult; his lack of dopamine reduces the reward and motivation process, forcing Chris to find new ways to stay inspired. And yet, once he is on the rock, climbing appears to be one of the very few activities that minimise his symptoms.

Chris is now potentially coming to the end of the “honeymoon” period of his Parkinson’s. This means he could start to see the effects of the disease more acutely, including the impact it may have on his ability to continue climbing. Knowing this, Chris has taken early retirement from teaching to climb as much as possible around his home in Norway and with friends in Sheffield.

Parky Players

Parky Players was set up by Janet Shipton in Nottingham, during lockdown, to raise awareness of Parkinson's. They create performances that are witty, thought provoking and often silly, to change perceptions of what it is to have Parkinson’s, and what is still achievable after diagnosis.

They’ve gone from creating an award-winning online panto to developing it into a UK tour culminating in three performances at Edinburgh Fringe, 2022. They’ve won the 2023 World Parkinson’s Congress song competition, and received the Neurodiverse Review Award for championing disability in theatre. Their latest comedy sketch show Shaken Not Stirred features villains and heroes working for and against 007 in his quest to find a cure for Parkinson’s.

Tenx9

Tenx9 was founded in Belfast in 2011 by Paul Doran and Pádraig ÓTuama (tenx9.com), as a night for ordinary people to tell true stories of their life - not fiction, not fable. Stories with a start, middle and end (although not in that order necessarily). Stories that have the listeners wondering ‘What happened next?’ ‘Why did she do that?’ ‘Who is that character?’ or ‘That character sounds just like my Auntie Myrtle.’

Whilst Belfast is the city of Saints and Scholars, Nottingham is the City of Literature, we were born to do this :)

If you want to be one of our storytellers we would love to hear your story - we especially welcome the shy, hesitant and reluctant. Story submissions by the 18th April at: [email protected]; tenx9.com/nottingham; @tenx9.nottm. Story guidelines: tenx9.com/editorialguidelines. Please note, we have only 3 spots for stories this time.
